A New Way

Aims and Principles

The aims of A New Way

  • To raise awareness of the possibility of coexistence and mutual respect
  • To give children, parents, and teachers, both Arabs and Jew, a chance to get to know each other
  • To enable a relevant and experiential dialogue between Jewish and Arab children and parents
  • To experience the culture, customs, and way of life of 'the other'
  • To reduce prejudice, suspicion, and stereotypical thinking
  • To develop tolerance, esteem, and mutual respect

Working Principles

Equality
The projects are accompanied by volunteers from both communities. The facilitators are Jews and Arabs and instruction is both in Hebrew and in Arabic, according to circumstances.

Multiculturalism
The meetings enable participants to become familiar with the culture of 'the other' in a variety of fields: customs, holidays, day-to-day life, religion, music and dance, and more.

Cooperation with the community
A new Way initiates activity which aims at widening the circle of those involved in the projects. The parents of pupils from both communities meet in workshops and at special events. Multicultural workshops are held for the teaching staff of those schools participating in the projects, and exhibitions and perfomances present the results of these meetings to all of the pupils.

Enrichment
Every meeting provides an opportunity for enrichment, for experience, and for the acquisition of knowledge in the fields of art or science– Rhythmics, drama, ecology, etc.). Special bonding activities are held at locations such as the Children's Museum in Holon, Beit Hagefen in Haifa, the Weizmann Institute, etc.

Long-term activity
In order to give greater significance to the meetings these are spread out over a long period. Most of the projects are spread over two or three years and involve 10-20 meetings each year.
