The aims of A New Way
The principles guiding A New Way
1. |
To arouse awareness of the possibility of coexistence in an atmosphere of mutual respect |
2. |
To give a chance to children, parents, and teachers, both Jews and Arabs, to get to know each other |
3. |
To enable a significant and empirical dialogue between Jewish and Arab parents and children |
4. |
To experience the culture, customs, and way of life of 'the other' |
5. |
To reduce prejudice, suspicion, and stereotypical thinking |
6. |
To cultivate tolerance, respect, and mutual esteem |
Equality:
The project supervisors and leaders are both Jews and Arabs and instruction is bilingual.
Multiculturalism:
The meetings throw light on the culture of 'the other' in different fields: customs, holidays, day-to-day life, religion, music, dance, and more.
Involvement of the community:
A New Way initiates activities which aim at widening the circles involved in the project: the parents from both communities meet at workshops and at special events. Multicultural workshops are held for the teaching staff of the schools at which the projects are held and the results of these meetings are shown to all of the pupils at exhibitions and shows.
Enrichment:
Every meeting provides an opportunity for enrichment and for experience in the fields of art or science (music, movement, drama, plastic arts), and also the possibility of experiencing an outdoor workshop where special bonding activities are held at venues such as the Children's Museum in Holon, etc.
Long-term activity:
In order to make the meetings more significant these are spread over a long period of time. Most of the projects are spread over two or three years and involve between 10 and 14 meetings each year.
