In Jaffa there are also two projects in
progress, in schools in which Jewish and Arab pupils study together:
Tekumah School and Neve Shaanan School
The projects in the primary schools and in the junior high schools follow a model based on the extensive experience of A New Way during the past years:
- The projects run for two to three years.
- Each project includes from 10 to14 meetings throughout the school
year.
- The project starts with preparatory activity: meeting of the school staff-rooms,
and a unicultural meeting of the participating classes with the staff of A New Way, concentrating on expectations and explanation of the terminology.
- The pupils get to know each other gradually, while working with various art forms: drama, music, the plastic arts, and enjoying outdoor activities.
During the first meetings, drama is used to develop interpersonal relations.
Later on, either drama or music are used to span the gap between the cultures.
The meetings based on the plastic arts further on in the project encourage creativity and cooperation, and leads the pupils on to joint creativity in a project which will be a contribution to the community.
- During the year parent-pupil meetings and staff-room meetings are held, as well as an additional unicultural meeting which is aimed at replicating the process.
- The highlight of every project is the special activity aimed at enrichment or enjoying a good time together (such as a visit to a museum or a sports day).
The projects planned in the schools in Jaffa (internal projects
and not jointly with other schools) will enjoy the cooperation of the Ministry
of Education. Their aim is to provide joint experiences for Jewish and Arab
pupils in order to improve the interaction and the social climate in the
class. The project will provide the opportunity for the representation and
expression of the components of the cultural identity of each cultural group
in the school, and will encourage good intercultural communication and the
promotion of an accepting and tolerant social setting. |
